Moving on as a performer;

What are different techniques used to master each genre?
There are a number of different techniques used to drum in different genres. For Reggae, one main technique used when drumming would be loosen the snare wires beneath the drum, creating an authentic sound, similar to a steel drum. Having this on a full drum kit allows for the drummer to add in aspects such as cymbals, tom rolls, hi hat patterns etc. Using these elements with the reggae influence allows for a variety of rythmn possibilities.
A clear example featuring this snare technique can be shown here;

A technique used in the Disco/Funk genre as a drummer is the 'four on the floor' rythmn. This consists of using a kick drum on beats 1, 2, 3 and 4. Having such a simple kick pattern allows for the drummer to be more creative with other patterns used. Another way this technique is used is the fact that the music would be played at discos and clubs, where people would dance to it, and having the fast and upbeat pattern makes that dancing easier.
A clear example of the four on the floor being used can be seen here;

When playing blues, the playing style is very slow. Typically with this genre, the lyrics would be based on a depressing topic, and to emphasise that, it would be played with little enthusiasm. A good example can be seen here

Soul drumming is very animated and visual, that being because this music would be played in a church. Another reason there is such passion in live performances is because the artists would be playing in their house of worship. Being passionate about music and religion makes for a gripping style of music to watch. an example of church drumming looks like this;

What do i find enjoyable/challenging?
The most enjoyable part about drumming is exploring these new genres. My strongest genre when drumming is rock, so having a break from hard hitting and fast patterns and focusing more on slower and more relaxed patterns is a nice change.
Challenging elements of moving onto new genres are settling into them, and getting used to the different patterns. For example breaking the habit of wanting to add something to a simple beat, when it needs to stay simple, overcomplicating it.

What can i do to broaden my performance techniques?
When stepping out of my rock comfort zone, one way i can broaden the playing technique of other genres is to watch videos of other drummers playing songs from that genre, and try to mirror it.
