Film Genre Analysis

Genre one - Action - The Matrix
'clubbed to death' by Rob Dougan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APgQ1lNAzdg

1. When composing this track, the composer would've been trying to build tension. This is achieved by the slow and quiet build up with the piano, and adding layers (first the drums, then the sound effects). The piano drones through the track, and towards the end, the drums and effects go silent, which reflects the loss of 'reality' (defying gravity) and then the drums come back in, symbolising the drop back to reality. Using these techniques, Dougan successfully build tension.

2. In terms of sonic components, Dougan fades in a sound effect which gives some diversity to the track. Seeing as the only two instruments heard are drums and piano and the track lasts around 6 minutes, these added effects give more from the track, which wouldn't male the track feel like it drags on for as long as it does.

3. When conveying the atmosphere, i think the only way the composer was unsuccessful was the fact he brings in the drums too early, in a way not letting the track build up enough.

4.When arranging the sonic components, i think the composer could of added more of a range of the effects. rather than sticking to two, or three at the maximum, there could have been more effects to reflect whats happening on screen.

Genre two - drama - peaky blinders
'Out of the black' by royal blood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VGrLEnEH7Y

1. The atmosphere given by this piece of music would be chaos. The scene shows explosions, violence, blood etc. which is reflected by the music. The heavy bass and loud drums really emphasise the chaotic and 'in your face' style.

2. The sonic components used are little but the main one would be the distortion pedal used on the bass to get a low and heavy sound, but allow for a higher tone as well.

3. the composer successfully conveyed the atmosphere, especially through the ending of the song, the fast riff, which we hear throughout the song, is crazy which is shown visually through the video

4. Using sonic elements, again the composer was successful, the distortion pedal allows for the thick tone we hear. i would keep the track the same as it works perfect.

Genre three - Comedy - Ted - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fbo_pQvU7M

1. From this, we get a calm and comedic atmosphere. There is a gentle song in the background and it shows the two friends bonding, in a comedic way, so the track perfectly completes that atmosphere. Within the genre, a feature that's very common is the music stopping to deliver a punchline, which effectively conveys the humorous approach the composer would've been going for.

2.The sonic components used in the music here are the inclusion of a trombone with an 'all over the place' pitch range which reflects the unorganised, comedic element of the film.

3.The atmosphere that the composer would've been trying to create would've been a comedic one, to reflect the film.

4. Using sonic elements, again the composer was successful, i would keep the track the same as it works perfect.
