Film Genre / Music Style / Instrument make up.

Horror/Thriller;
The most common style of music used in horror films would be heavy metal, with highly distorted guitars and vocals. Distortion within the vocals creates an edgy feel, which adds to the already edgy visuals. Distorted lyrics are hard to understand, which affects the audience, leaving them to figure out whats being said. By doing this, any jump scare will be 10 times more effective, having the audience off guard. When it comes to instruments in horror films, as well as distorted guitar, vocals etc, another instrument used to create the edgy sounds is called a waterphone. Thin brass bars of varied length are played with a violin bow and sounds like this. (click)

Comedy;
Music within comedy films  should reflect the visuals. The tempo of the music is usually very fast and upbeat. While the music is there, its not very loud, so it allows the audience to keep their focus on what the actor is doing. Another feature used in comedy are songs with one meaning, over the visuals of something contrasting to the song, an example is seen here in the trailer for ted. We hear a song that was written clearly with meaning for a best friend, however the visual part shows the two making a mess and doing drugs, which takes away the whole innocence of the song. When it comes to instruments, the most common and generic instruments used would be the piano, and accordion.

Action;
Similar to horror, the music within action films should build tension within the audience. The music should build up to a climax for the given scene (actor performs a stunt for example). in this James Bond clip, you can hear the orchestral franchise song associated with Bond movies, and it falls silent prior to the gunshot. That would be the climax of that scene, which is effectively emphasised by the silence. Generic action movie instruments are very orchestral, specifically with the bond franchise, saxophones and guitars, the guitar plays a riff that goes up and down with the pitch slightly, that being the main tension builder. The saxophones create a crescendo and get gradually louder, again building tension.
