Soundtracks in film trailers;
The trailer i have chosen to analyse is the comedy ted produced in 2012, starring Mark Wahlberg and voice actor, more famously known from animated comedy family guy, Seth McFarlane. There is a big contrast between the start of the trailer and the rest. The first scene shows the young protagonist with his toy bear wishing he was real, accompanied by gentle bells ringing, which highlights the innocence of childhood. The next scene shows the bear has come to life, with the same bells but a faster tempo which is an emphasis on the boys excitement.
The next scene is the contrast and where the innocence leaves the screen. The screen goes dark and shows the pair "grown up", taking drugs and spilling food which is accompanied by a horn with an inconsistent pitch over the top of Harry Nilssons ' Best Friend ' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eiwpZS3Vqg). This shows the bond they still have, just in a completely inappropriate way. This song plays throughout the trailer, but one feature seen in this tailer is when the music stops completely to deliver punchlines or information. By doing this, the punchline or information being delivered can be shown more clearly, amplifying it by taking away the track.
The closing two scenes show the pair arguing, when it turns violent, a rock song plays (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVzvRsl4rEM) with added effects such as smashing glass, things breaking etc. The fast paced song builds up a comedic tension as the two fight. The final part to the trailer shows them walking down the street, with droning music, and ends with the silence to deliver a punchline, followed by a guitar ringing showing "in cinemas soon.."
